Iverson’s Design won an Outstanding Achievement Award in the marine sailboats category of the 2010 International Achievement Awards for an offshore traditional design dodger and retractable bimini top. The dodger needed to protect the sailing crew from adverse weather conditions and the bimini helped to protect from both rain and sun, making sailing more enjoyable. The client’s request was to create a design that was aethetically pleasing and complementary to the sailing vessel’s overall design. The client also wanted the added safety features of side grab rails and an aft grab rail.

The elegant design and intricate details of this dodger/bimini design were a reflection to the classic styling of this sloop rig sailboat. From the choice of patterned Sunbrella® canvas to the integration of graceful curves and systematic stitching, a complex yet modest design was achieved.

The overall design of the combination was well accepted by the client. Upon boarding his boat, he used the side grab rails on the dodger to steady himself and remarked on the dodger’s structural integrity. He stated that the dodger not only looked like it belonged on the boat but it also felt like it was a structural part of the boat. The frame design was constructed from 1-1/4in diameter tubing which greatly enhanced the strength. This was important given the fact that the dodger was intended to be used as a safety device through its added side and back grab rails.
