L-shaped custom-built sofas create additional sleeping area

This project, which won an Award of Excellence in the salon/dinette upholstery category of the 2008 MFA Awards, consisted of making two L-shaped custom-built sofas that create additional sleeping areas when made into beds. The owner wanted a rustic Western look, which Canvas Designers Inc. accomplished by using distressed leathers and making accent pillows, including one that looked like a cowboy boot. The two sofas were made from plywood framing, and consisted of storage in the bases and armrests. The most complex aspect was designing both the bed component and storage component. The unique slide mechanism allows for the hinging access to storage and the sliding aspect for the sofa seats. The back is removable and becomes the extension filler for the bed component.
