Awning provides shade and rain protection for main deck

This project, which won an Outstanding Achievement Award in the miscellaneous marine canvas category of the 2008 MFA Awards, called for an awning to provide shade and rain protection for the main deck of the USCGC Eagle. Because the awning would be used while underway, it had to be built as strong as a sail. Heavy, tapered Dacron patches reinforced all load areas. A low stretch webbing ran around the perimeter of the awning for strength. The Chief wanted the awning to be deployed and removed quickly, so Custom Marine Canvas used side release buckles held by heavily stitched 1-inch tubular webbing. If the awning is to stay up for an extended period, back up ties, made of tapered splices, three strand Dacron, through stainless steel (Inox) pressed rings, can be used.
