The U.S. Coast Guard recently released the completed 2011 National Recreational Boating Survey. This is the first in a series of reports that will convey the results of and describe tools to be produced from the newly designed and implemented survey. The report focuses on overall boating participation, boat ownership, the types of boats used and the amount of time that boats are used for different regions of the country during 2011.

The estimated numbers produced by the survey already are being used to assess the effectiveness of efforts to reduce boating accidents. The survey also produced national, regional and state estimates of boating participation and provided insight into boating’s economic impact and assessed important safety measures.
