New Florida boat titling law

Florida’s Uniform Certificate of Title Act (HB 475/S 676) was recently signed into law. Recreational boat enthusiasts and industry partners pushed for the legislation as a way to protect consumers from buying damaged, destroyed or stolen boats. The new titling law includes significant consumer protections for boaters; similar to the way Carfax identifies a vehicle’s rightful owner and whether it has been in an accident. The law’s supporters say this helps boaters avoid unwittingly purchasing a stolen or previously damaged vessel. Additionally, supporters say the titling law creates more confidence in the marketplace, leading to more reasonable financing options for boat owners, and protects dealers from being saddled with an unsellable craft.
