Flammability requirements for boat mattresses

Published On: May 1, 2008Categories: News

Question: We have been reading a lot about new mattress flammability requirements. Do they apply to boat mattresses?

Answer: The main regulation in the United States for mattresses comes through the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and those regulations have become increasingly more strict in the last few years. The particular document in question is 16 C.F.R., Part 1633.

According to information compiled by the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), mattresses used in the bunk area of a boat probably fall under Coast Guard regulations and not 16 C.F.R., Part 1633. The ISPA has gathered extensive information on this topic, which can be accessed under the Advocacy section of their web site.
