“Couch” area adds a family room feel to salon
Custom Canvas of Charleston Inc., N. Charleston, S.C.
This project, which won an Outstanding Achievement Award in the salon/dinette upholstery category of the 2008 MFA Awards, added a family room feel with a “couch” area in the salon instead of a dinette. Comfort was the husband’s priority; colorful island interior was the wife’s priority. Creating a comfy couch on a square wooden base was a challenge. Custom Canvas glued 2-inch soft, cushy foam on top of 4-inch semi-firm foam and glued half circles to the edges. Back cushions were created using a wedge that was 9-inches on bottom and 3-inches on top. The long section needed to be one cushion, so rounded edges were mitered where the two cushions meet. The smaller side followed the curved base where the edges of the foam were rounded. These curves created a challenge when fabricating the covers. Colorful pillows carried out the island theme.
