Custom Canvas of Charleston, Charleston, S.C.

This project, which won an Outstanding Achievement Award in the tops 27 feet and up category of the 2009 MFA Awards, included a custom designed 1-inch frame with no straps or legs to obstruct the sides of the cockpit, a new bimini top with a zipper to the dodger, two viewing windows and six zippered openings. Custom Canvas had to figure out how to hold the forward bow in place, which they did with a strap around the mast since the customer didn’t want legs or straps on the sides. Custom Canvas also had to figure out how to lay out the zippers and flaps so that the customer could reach the boom, sail and sail cover. Lastly, Custom Canvas had to find a way to install two viewing windows without interfering with the zippered openings. Custom Canvas ended up with triangular-shaped windows, which worked very well.
