“Fish Bowl”—Cruisers Yacht 560
Installation: Gregory Phillips, Mark Durecki
Materials: Sunbrella® by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC, TUFFAK® Marine 5 polycarbonate by Plaskolite Inc., SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix, Strataglass by Strataglass LLC, Phifertex® Screen by Phifer®
Project Description: This project consisted of redesigning the front enclosure and the rear camper panels on this Cruisers Yacht 560. The customer requested larger windows in the front to extend the view lines. The old enclosure had numerous gaps, so the new panels were redesigned for a better fit to reduce possible leaks and gaps. The two large side curtains on the front enclosure have zip-out screens to allow the boat captain to easily tip people at the fuel dock without having to exit the boat. The customer also requested storage bags for the rear enclosure panels. The front two driver windows were built with a rigid polycarbonate to provide maximum visibility. Upper screen vents were added on the two front window panels and on the two large side curtain windows. The rear enclosure windows were enlarged for a better view and screens were built into four of the panels for maximum ventilation.

Prestige
Installation: Dan Johnson and Sean Rooney
Materials: Sunbrella® by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC, TUFFAK® Marine 5 polycarbonate by Plaskolite Inc., Costa Track® by Costa Marine Canvas and Enclosures, DOT® Common Sense Fasteners™, YKK Zippers by YKK®
Project Description: The client requested an enclosure that was easy to use with maximum airflow and was “as sexy as the boat with clean smooth lines and no visible hardware.” Requiring more than 80 feet of track, project challenges included fitting the oversized front panels around the sharp corners of the venturi, which required having two vertical zippers meet at the corner. The center bottom of the front panels has a search light that needed to move yet also stay sealed up. The two front center panels have 6½-feet-tall U-zippers that swing up to the ceiling. Double-sided suction cups secure the overlapping portions to the ceiling and DOT Common Sense Fasteners secure the remainder of the perimeter. The four side panels all roll up to allow for airflow in the tropical heat. The styling and design for this project were one of a kind and the fit and finish turned out flawless.

Fountain of Youth
Installation: Jason Reeves, Vorei Frost
Materials: Sunbrella® Horizon™ Capriccio by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC, Carbon Fiber Silver and Torchfire by Spradling International Inc.®, Aruvo lifetime thread by Fil-Tec Inc.
Project Description: The client’s instructions were to “make it bitchin’.” This client changed his mind often and was vague with what he liked, making this project quite challenging. After he initially rejected the idea of a diamond design, detailed drawings convinced him it was the right path. The project execution was difficult with multiple concave and complex shapes. It was very challenging to come up with a design that made sense and would transfer to other parts of the boat. The unique radiating diamond design required a template made of acrylic, which was cut on a laser. This made laying out the diamonds and matching up transitions more accurate and was also a huge time saver. Although the challenges felt overwhelming at times, the process and results were a reminder of how much of a fabricator’s skill set includes artistry, and the project resolved in an intensely creative and satisfying way.

Upholstery Upgrade
Installation: Josh Goodyear, Zachary Baccala
Materials: Silvertex® by Spradling International Inc.®, SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix
Project Description: The clients wanted a diamond pattern in all of the seats and a material that is not a typical vinyl. Spradling Silvertex has a unique texture and colors that worked well with the existing carpet and enclosure. One of the biggest challenges this project posed was incorporating the diamond stitching around all of the middle sections of the seat backs without having the diamonds run off as they go through curves in the seat. After a lot of testing, the fabrication team found a way to allow the diamonds to run through curved pieces without having the shape be deformed. The U-shaped lounger was especially challenging. Although some may believe the “juice isn’t worth the squeeze” when it comes to running diamond patterns through curves, this project proves otherwise. The clients were thoroughly pleased with the finished project.

Modernized Sea Ray
Installation: Zachary Baccala, Josh Goodyear
Materials: Sundance by Morbern®, Silvertex® by Spradling International Inc.®, SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix, Hexagon Stitching by Vic’s Upholstery Supply, AquaMat® AquaWeave™ Solstice Sandbar by Corinthian Marine
Project Description: The clients wanted to modernize their 1999 Sea Ray 340 Sundancer with all new cockpit upholstery and flooring. They wanted the primary material to be white with navy and gray accents in something other than a typical vinyl, and Morbern Sundance and Spradling Silvertex products worked well. They requested decorative stitching but did not want diamonds, so the design included a hexagon pattern. The larger seat back in the aft section originally contained a pull-down, which was removed and reshaped to fit the new design. The seat bottoms were made completely from scratch and used new foam that was cut and shaped to form the U-shaped knee lifts in the aft seating area. This project received a lot of positive feedback, and the clients were ecstatic with the results. The colors, textures and the hexagon pattern on this really look great and the whole boat really pops.

Snow Goose Cushions
Installation: Donna Ingram
Materials: Sunbrella® Luxe Indigo, Sunbrella Buttercup and Sunbrella Dickson® Paris Navy Stripe by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC
Project Description: The clients purchased the Grand Banks trawler and wanted to update it. One of the clients is a designer, and she selected fabrics at the shop. Due to the pandemic, it was difficult to get many of the chosen fabrics and alternates had to be chosen. The clients were documenting the refit of the boat for publication, which created a tight time frame. The challenge of meeting the time frame with such beautiful fabrics made for a very enjoyable project.

Aft Shade for 78-Foot Marlow with Carbon Fiber Poles
Installation: Alex Patterson, Logan Boyle
Materials: Stamoid Lightweight by Serge Ferrari North America Inc.
Project Description: The clients requested shade and light rain protection for the open aft area of the flying bridge on a 78-foot Marlow Explorer. The challenge was to cover a large space with a lightweight, easily removable and compact storable shade system that would fit into a 68-inch-wide locker. A tension shade was designed to be used for slow cruising and anchoring mounted with track and keder at the back of the hardtop and secured to four 1½-inch carbon fiber poles toward the rear of the boat. The poles were selected because of their strength and also because the split pole system design meets the storage requirements. The inner poles were mounted using the Makefast pole base. Pole placement was designed so each pole could be “strapped” to take the tension load, which eliminated the need to through-bolt the bases. The two center poles are 4 inches taller than the outer poles, which helps provide a high point for water drainage and adds to the aesthetic appeal of the shade.

Sew Smooth
Installation: Michael Charlton
Materials: Stamoid Open by Serge Ferrari North America Inc., TUFFAK® Marine 5 polycarbonate by Plaskolite Inc., SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix
Project Description: This project, a three-sided full rigid polycarbonate enclosure on a center console, was designed to take enclosures to another level of design and class. The wings fold in with one zipper and fasten in to make it very easy to get to the bow of the boat. There is a U-zipper in the forward center that swings up to allow for airflow. The main wow factor on this enclosure is the designer diamond stitching on the lower section of the wings, which complements the stitching on the upholstery and ties it all together.

Glass House
Installation: Keri Ames
Materials: Stamoid Top by Serge Ferrari North America Inc., TUFFAK® Marine 5 polycarbonate by Plaskolite Inc., SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix, YKK Zippers by YKK®
Project Description: This project consists of a full flybridge enclosure refit on a Sea Ray 52 Sedan Bridge. The customer requested a “glass house” with an updated, minimalist design. The challenge was to fabricate manageable sized panels to remove and store during the winter season when the boat is shrink-wrapped. To achieve this, several aft panels were combined to create larger single seamless panels, and upper and lower panels were connected by a zipper covered both on the exterior and interior. The two original aft center windows were combined into one larger window that aligns with the front enclosure window. Making canvas necessities disappear was a focus to update the project. The fabric masking to protect from UV burn on the stainless steel was eliminated and replaced with clear tubing adhered to the stainless steel structure. On the interior, all zippers were covered in the same material as the exterior, making them invisible and presenting a high-end finished appearance.

Salt Life Silverton
Installation: Michael Charlton
Materials: Docril® by Docril Fabrics® LLC, SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix, TUFFAK® Marine 5 polycarbonate by Plaskolite Inc.
Project Description: This was a full upper and lower canvas replacement. This customer wanted a sexy updated look to his boat with all rigid polycarbonate glass and large openings for plenty of airflow. The project allowed for a lot of creativity, including modifying the upper framework from a six-bow bimini to a five-bow bimini. The middle bow stands straight up vertically, and getting the shape right was a challenge because it is a completely different shape from all the other bows. Moving the framework allowed for large open areas on the sides for rigid glass openings to flip up for airflow. The window lines flow with the boat to give it a sleek, updated look. All the fasteners at the bottom of the enclosure are hidden. They are attached to a separate flap sewn to the inside to give the enclosure a much cleaner look.

Formenti ZAR 95
Materials: Sunbrella® Plus by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC, Renolit Prime Crystal Clear rolled vinyl by Renolit, Gore® Tenara® thread by W.L. Gore & Associates Inc., YKK Zippers by YKK®
Project Description: The clients wanted a full enclosure for their new ZAR Formenti 95 Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) that allowed them to drive at full speed either with the enclosure closed or only with the bimini. They wanted the entire length of the boat to be usable, and at 6 meters (20 feet), the size was challenging. All panels needed to be easily rolled and stored, and separate panels with mosquito netting instead of vinyl were needed for ventilation at night. As no similar boat enclosure existed in Europe, every aspect of the design and fabrication was new. The project required 67 meters (220 feet) of Sunbrella® Plus, more than 50 YKK coil zippers and more than 18 meters (60 feet) of Renolit’s Prime Crystal Clear rolled vinyl. The customers tested the bimini and the enclosure at 90 km/hour (55 mph) with no problems.

Project Description: This client wanted to go “all in” on a completely new enclosure with all the extras for his Regal 2565. This included new stainless steel frames, Velcro® shades for the window panels, shades for the windshield made out of Soltis 92, and separate front, back and side panels made out of Soltis 86 for ventilation and shade. When installed, the Soltis 86 panels create a complete enclosure serving as mosquito screening on hot days. For trailering, the frames can be stored below the windshield but are secured in their deck fittings. This project was unique because the customer wanted everything possible. Along with the easy-to-store frames, the shades and the enclosure made out of Soltis 86, an additional extension was created for the bimini toward the bow and the project also included a full cover and a travel cover.

Classy Cobia
Installation: Stephen Sawyer
Materials: BreakWater X® by Safety Components Fabric Technologies Inc., Strataglass by Strataglass LLC, SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix
Project Description: The customer requested an enclosure for this 2021 Cobia 35-foot Center Console that protected the helm and aft while running but also allowed easy access forward. The client was a 6’5” NFL player who needed plenty of space to maneuver and easy access to the berthing below. Cleanly tracking to powder-coated aluminum while preventing future corrosion was a primary challenge along with the fact that the client was immediately running the boat for 300 miles to his home offshore, which left no margin for error. The client reported no leaks on the run and was ecstatic with the results.

Installation: Rob Kotowski, Gregory Phillips, Mark Durecki
Materials: Sunbrella® by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC, SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix, Costa Track® by Costa Marine Canvas and Enclosures, YKK Zippers by YKK®
Project Description: The customer wanted a cover that kept his boat clean, protected his investment and could be multipurposed for towing and for storage. The final design tracked the entire hardtop so that the cover could zip on and off for attachment. Front towing straps were added to secure it to the trailer for added protection. Vents were added to the port and starboard sides to allow heat and moisture to escape. To make installation and removal of the cover as easy as possible, a zipper entrance was added on the port and starboard sides that splits the cover into two separate pieces. This also allows the customer to gain access to his boat with minimal work involved. The cover provides the ultimate protection and is streamlined to the boat. It was designed to not only be used on land but also while docked in the water.

Arriva Tender Cover
Installation: Nick Olsen, Peter Tkaczuk
Materials: WeatherMAX® SG by Safety Components Fabric Technologies Inc., SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix, YKK Zippers by YKK®, Boat Vent 3™ by Vico Marine
Project Description: This project was to make a well-fitted, almost “skin-tight” cover for a large tender stored on the bow of a superyacht, with no fastening to the boat. The design of the boat was based on a 1956 Porsche Speedster combined with elements of the watercraft of the 1930s. As the boat was extremely fragile with a delicate paint job, the cover needed to be lined with a soft protective layer against the paint and also be lightweight for storage. Templating was painstaking due to the complexity of the distinctive shape of the bow and stern of the boat. Each section of the cover had a shape that needed to be joined together in the correct location for a proper fit and the client’s desired aesthetic look. Shock cord in the hem keeps the cover on and in its desired location just below the waterline.

Activ 805 Sundeck Quicksilver
Materials: WeatherMAX® 80 by Safety Components Fabric Technologies Inc., Gore® Tenara® thread by W.L. Gore & Associates Inc.
Project Description: This Activ 805 Sundeck Quicksilver stays outside in the harsh weather conditions of Croatia year-round. The customers wanted a full cover to provide UV protection for the entire boat down to the waterline, including the outboard motor. They also wanted access to the battery without having to remove the entire cover. Additionally, the cover has to withstand trailering on the German Autobahn and Croatian winter storms where wind speeds can exceed 150 km/hour (more than 90 mph), so the cover had to fit like a glove. The sewn-in webbing runs directly below the chine, which is enough to pull the full cover downward without the need for additional straps. Due to the zipper at the bathing platform for easy battery access, a separate cover was made for the outboard motor that can be zipped onto the main cover. The main cover uses two ratchets (one on each side) and Stayput bungees at the bathing platform.

Traditional Beauty
Installation: Keri Ames
Materials: Sunbrella® by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC, Stamoid Top by Serge Ferrari North America Inc., TUFFAK® Marine 5 polycarbonate by Plaskolite Inc., SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix, YKK Zippers by YKK®
Project Description: This project consisted of a full canvas installation of a dodger with frame, bimini with frame and connector for a classic early 80s era Sabre 34. The client wanted to keep the traditional dodger design and provide flexibility for use in different weather conditions. The challenge of this project was a client with a large stature and small cockpit area. It presented an opportunity to think outside the box of standard design and practices. Bringing the dodger shoulder width out equal to the mounting width created more space underneath and more openess. To maintain pleasing aesthetics, the side panels were used to shape the dodger instead of the frame. The project presented an opportunity to understand the reaction of different materials used, in this case polycarbonate, to create a finished look in a way not previously done. Custom finishes maintain a traditional look for a classic boat while bringing in modern elements.

CNB 60 Sailing in Comfort
Installation: Ki-Raphael Sulkowski
Materials: Sunbrella® Seamark by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC, MAC5 Polycarbonate
Project Description: The project was to replace the dysfunctional, outdated dodger and bimini on a CNB 60 sailing yacht. Client priorities included uninterrupted views from as many angles as possible, protection for the companion way, a front zip window to allow ventilation, an option to fold away the rear bimini when not in use, and a spacious rear deck area protected from sun, rain and wind. The redesign included a new futuristic rear deck area for this 60-foot one-of-a-kind yacht that allows the clients to entertain in almost all weather conditions. The dodger’s non-conventional shape allows almost uninterrupted views as well as additional space. The clear dodger windows are made from rigid polycarbonate material manufactured in three sections to allow easy removal for racing. The middle section is a zip window that provides ventilation. Pockets and channels were incorporated into the bimini for smooth installation of LED lighting, and it can be folded together and stored against the backstay.

“Goose Landing Pad”—Skin Top
Installation: Rob Kotowski, Gregory Phillips
Materials: Stamoid Open by Serge Ferrari North America Inc., SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix
Project Description: The customer wanted a watertight soft-top enclosure to mimic the look of a hardtop. The white Stamoid Open fabric used on this project provided a clean finish and also provided a light color on the inside, which brightened up the boat. Creating a fabric top that looked similar to a hardtop required the fabrication of a 16-foot-long skin top with powder-coated aluminum trim to match the Stamoid Open fabric. This project required a lot of heat to stretch the fabric to tension it properly for installation. There were a lot of antennas and rod holders mounted to the structure that provided some complicated areas for patterning as well as installation. The customer was extremely happy with the final results.

Surf Sail—AFT Shade Sail Extension
Installation: Mason “Crash” Meeks
Materials: WeatherMAX® 3D by Safety Components Fabric Technologies Inc.
Project Description: This project involved designing a custom shade solution to extend a bimini over the motor hatch in a way that does not interfere with tow ropes and wake surfing due to poles or framework coming up from the boat. The innovative solution mounts the bimini to the existing top, extending straight out the back to allow the tow rope to go underneath. This required developing hardware that would mount to both 7/8-inch and 1-inch stainless tubing and designing custom reinforced telescoping carbon fiber poles. To make setup and takedown easy, the pole receiver has a “D ring knob” that assists in holding the pole in place and tensioning the canvas. On the other end of the carbon pole, a custom eye end that fits the #5 spurred grommet in the corners of the canvas secures the sail covers from the end of the pole to the back of the bimini.

Bertram Transformer Top
Installation: Dan Johnson and Sean Rooney
Materials: Stamoid by Serge Ferrari North America Inc., DOT® Common Sense Fasteners™, Costa Track® by Costa Marine Canvas and Enclosures, YKK Zippers by YKK®
Project Description: The customer wanted an aft shade, a sunfly and a cockpit cover. The main portion of the top is on a single bow with a cantilever brace from above. This wraps around the bow with a zipper pocket. Costa Track is attached to the flybridge with an access cut out for the flybridge ladder, which comes through the top. The cockpit cover simply zips to the flap of the aft shade and gets pulled down to the transom with DOT snaps. For the sunfly mode, the bottom of the cockpit cover gets unzipped, removing 3 feet from the length. The sunfly is deployed out to two custom-welded 6-foot support poles that get placed in the fishing rod holders. The cover is pulled tight when clipped to the support pole with a cord and a jam cleat.

Bootssattlerei Hallier
Materials: Sunbrella® Plus by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC, Renolit Prime Crystal Clear rolled vinyl by Renolit, Gore® Tenara® thread by W.L. Gore & Associates Inc., YKK Zippers by YKK®
Project Description: The clients initially wanted a new enclosure and an extension of the bimini toward the bow for their Sea Ray 260 Sundeck to provide shade in the bow area. The original request involved reusing the four frames in the back with the extension going to the end of the seating group in the bow. After helping the owners see how much space would be lost during bad weather using this design, the clients agreed that making an enclosure for the entire boat made more sense. The newly designed enclosure includes the entire bow area, which allows the customers to enjoy the full length and space of their Sea Ray. The two additional frames made for the bow extend the original bimini more than 3 meters (10 feet) and allow the clients to drive at full speed with just the bimini or the full enclosure put on.

“Blue by You”—Yamaha Makeover
Installation: Gregory Phillips, Mark Durecki
Materials: Sunbrella® Horizon™ by Glen Raven Custom Fabrics LLC, Seabrook by Morbern®, SolarFix® thread by Solar Fix, SeaDek® flooring by SeaDek® Marine Products
Project Description: The customers wanted to update and modernize the appearance of this small ski boat. They wanted a complete redesign with more comfortable seating and a flashy appearance. The design used three color combinations of fabrics that matched the exterior of the boat beautifully. Extra seating was added, the rear bench was modernized, the bucket seats were re-created and a blue camouflage SeaDek floor was patterned and installed. There was a great deal of foam work in the bench, captain and mate seats. The two
bucket seats were just molded plastic before the redesign. The rear bench seat had large humps between each seat, which limited the capacity to three people. Removing the humps increased the seating capacity and improved the level of comfort. The lines match throughout, making this a well-designed, sporty and comfortable ride. The customers loved the finished product.
