Want my advice?

This is very much a rhetorical question — I’m self-aware enough to know that you all have way more to offer me than the inverse!

Giving or receiving advice is a common theme in this issue, though, and it’s a key aspect of what makes this industry inspiring to cover: You are all so open with sharing ideas that may be game-changing help to another fabricator.

This generosity of wisdom is at the heart of the Marine Fabricators Association (MFA) Tools, Tips and Tricks contest, which we cover in the feature “Work smarter not harder.” Those pages include the first-, second- and third-place winners, as well as a handful of submissions that didn’t earn a prize but are still valuable.

In “Fabric selection 101,” suppliers provide their takes on what newer (and seasoned) fabricators should know about different marine textiles and when or why to use them.

The “Meeting the customers where they are” feature covers practical tips for businesses of various sizes to get in front of a digital audience. It’s often easier said than done, particularly during busy times, and the advice comes from people who get it.

The old aphorism “a rising tide lifts all boats” is true about marine fabrication — the success and professionalism of the whole industry speaks volumes to customers. Everyone quoted understands that and offers their experience to help you in your shop. In many cases, they are paying forward the guidance they benefitted from when they first started.

If you are ever struggling with something, pick up the phone and call your fellow fabricator. You’d be surprised how many people in this field are willing to spend their time problem-solving with you. I hope this magazine can offer some sparks of inspiration as well.
