Welcoming change

Published On: January 1, 2025Categories: Editorial

Ihave been pondering the old adage “change is the only constant.” In business, adapting to changes in staffing, workload, economic forces, fabrication techniques and production processes are all crucial to the bottom line and longevity. But change is often uncomfortable, and embracing its possibilities can be challenging.

This issue of Marine Fabricator is about seeing the positive possibilities of change. “Clever shade coverage is in demand” discusses how advancements in fabrics and hardware are allowing marine fabricators to create innovative options for clients seeking sun protection. “Death, taxes and canvas repairs” explores how even simple canvas repairs present growth opportunities for shops. Our annual 2025 Time Standards Manual excerpt provides guidelines for labor estimates that can inform your shop practices and encourage changes that you can make to ensure a profitable upcoming year. (The full manual is free to MFA members and can be found at marine.textiles.org/time-standards-app.)

Russ Griffin, Northcoast Marine Specialties LLC, discusses five things novice fabricators aren’t told during training classes. Steven Wayne, Southern Stitch Canvas & Upholstery LLC, talks about the major changes he made in his shop that helped him find joy in fabrication work again, and our business column discusses leadership skills that all workers can use to create positive change in their organizations.

And speaking of change, this is my last issue as Senior Editor of this publication. I am stepping into the next chapter of my life and leaving the magazine in the capable hands of our new Senior Editor Brianna Liestman. I have always appreciated your kindness as I learned the ropes of this industry, and I am confident you will extend your knowledge and warmth to Brianna as well. Let’s raise a New Year’s toast: Here’s to all the changes ahead and to embracing their possibilities despite the discomfort!
