Table technology marches forward
Plotting/cutting table technology has made significant strides over the past several years. Some key advancements mentioned by Chris Gilmartin, sales manager, North America, for Pathfinder Cutting Technology LLC in Indianapolis, include:
- Improvements in cutting-head design and motion-control systems. These advancements have increased the range of materials that can be cut on a single table and have made them more energy efficient as well, he explains.
- Expanded data-capturing options. “The industry has improved its ability to convert 3D shapes into dependable 2D patterns,” he says, adding this capability also has increased reliability.
- Reduced footprints. Conveyorized systems have become more compact and efficient, requiring less floor space while accelerating throughput.
- Faster materials handling. Systems allow rolls to be quickly switched out, decreasing changeover times, affording shops greater flexibility.
- Secured shop assets. “Protecting patterns digitally safeguards intellectual property from water damage, fire and workplace turnover,” he says.
Trevor Stevenson, president of Eastman Machine in Buffalo, N.Y., says the biggest changes have been around software, automation and intelligence systems, citing the integration of cameras and sensors. Their inclusion has improved the system accuracy and has allowed fabricators to identify issues proactively, enabling real-time adjustments.
He’s also starting to see the introduction of AI into these tables.
“AI can assist operators by helping optimize cutting paths, improving material utilization and even supporting troubleshooting,” Stevenson explains. “Over time, these systems are learning from usage and helping guide operators towards better outcomes.
“Overall, these advancements have modernized cutting systems,” he continues. “They are more connected, more intelligent and more supportive of the operator, which helps fabricators improve efficiency, reduce waste and maintain consistent quality.”
